Megacross kicked off it's 6th round with a very competitive race night, some of the old school riders came back, some from out of state that made a statement about their speed aka (Riley Busse 404) who won every class he entered and with some real speed.
Then you have the fact that on this night in this town it was 4th of July fireworks night, how that translates to june 24th is anyones guess but things around here can be lets say "unique"!!! In years past in fact for many the fireworks were set off and displayed here at the Fairgrounds, but the interaction between the city and the fairgrounds has been always tense, to a point they moved the fireworks to the other side of town to blow up all that stuff over the lakes and subdivisions.............but why is that cool? It made for some great photo opportunities for 451 Photography!
One thing about crossing that decade milestone in moto, it's time to beat up on the "old" guys in the class that have been there a while. This happened this weekend in the 40+ A class. R.J. Mckenzie quietly (352) snuck into the 25+A class in this same manner it's funny how riders are racing here and year after year they get older and then you see them in the next age class.
As the gate dropped for 40+ A , Chad Johnson (623) pulled the hole shot and took off in the lead, Larry Banks (13) grabbed second, and David Stickel (11) just shortly behind. Once Stickel got around another rider from the 40+ B/C class, he got right up with Banks and it was an instant battle between the two. Within the next lap Stickel was able to get around Banks, but Banks did not back off, he stayed right on his tail. For the next couple laps these two went back and forth with passing and getting up right next to one another, it was going to come down to the very last second on who would cross that finish line first. The rest of the class was right behind them. As the two are coming to finish their race, Banks is just barely in front and keeps it to the checkered flag! Banks finished with a second and Stickel got third. The two had a pretty intense race! All this was going on with Steven Perkins (164) trying to make up for his famous gate smash. It's been a while as "perkinator" used to demolish starting gates on a regular basis, will this night with the new "young kid" in the class he was trying to get his normal holeshot, just a little too soon. He came from last to be behind the group in this story on the last lap with no time to make any moves that would count. 40+ was some the more interesting racing of the night and there was a bunch.
50 Jr class had a tight race going on with Kolton Kadinger (812), Karson Moon(223), and Xzavier Welborn (26). These three had just inches between each other, every lap you could see as Kadinger and Moon would pull just a tad from Welborn as they went into the back part of the track, but as soon as they would get to the front part, Welborn would be right up there with them again. Moon was doing whatever he could to get around Kadinger and he finally did second to last lap. Within the last lap Moon was able to pull ahead of the other two and left the last little bit of the race for those two to battle. Moon didn’t have time to make any other passes so he finished with a fourth while Kadinger got fifth and Welborn placed sixth.
250 C class had a couple different battles going on, Amos Vincent (358 on his trusty KTM) was ahead of Wesley Johnson (26) just barely, these two battled for the first couple laps until Johnson found a spot to make a pass and get ahead of Vincent. Once Johnson passed Vincent he took off from him and was headed for the next guy. As that was going on there was a great race going on between Nic Loizzi (3) and Bryson Wells (926). These two were racing so close that as they would go into corners they were tire to tire. Wells wasn’t getting anywhere with following so he started trying to take the outsides to try and hopefully get around him, but Loizzi was not going to let that happen. These two battled all the way to the finish line, neither of them backed off, Loizzi was able to keep his seventh and wells placed in eight close behind.
Kyle Collati (987) took the lead in the 30+ A class with Chad Johnson (623) in second and Kyle White (19) in third. Collati was holding the lead for the first lap till Johnson and White came up and passed him. While Johnson was in the lead, him and White went into the berm basically next to each other and then about half a lap through their second lap around, White came up and passed Johnson to take the lead. Johnson was back in second with Collati still in third, Benjamin Schmidt (491) who was in fifth got around Justin Hager (788) to put himself in fourth and was now starting to get up in there with Collati. Once White got the lead he made a gap between him and the rest and kept it that way all the way to the finish. While the rest of the class battled it out. These guys pretty much kept their same spots the rest of the race till the finish.
Lucas Wood (27), Eddie Martens (412), and Thor Wharrie (14) started their 85 Sr race close together, not leaving much of a gap between one another. Wood took the lead right off the beat and had no intentions of losing it. Martens was in second with Wharrie wanting to get around as soon as he could, if he could. These three were putting out everything they had, pushing each other to their limits. Wood was doing some block passing and going from inside to inside to make sure he stayed ahead. Every time he did so he was picking up more speed, little by little, about half way through we could see the gap size increasing between him and Martens. While Martens and Wharrie had a smaller gap between them. The checkered flag came out as Wood crossed the finish line to take first, Martens was able to stay just barely ahead of Wharrie to keep his second, which left Wharrie with a third.
The 85 Jr class also had a fun race to watch, William Neill (111) took the lead off the start with Ryder Salas (199) right on his tail in second and Wyatt Sandy (701) close behind. It didn’t Take long before these kids started making passes, just getting into the second lap and Salas made a pass on Neill to take first from him. Sandy was instantly on Neill’s tail and was ready to make a pass as soon as he had the opportunity. Right as they went into the corner after the finish line jump, just starting their third lap, Sandy made the pass to put himself in second and Neill in third now. Sandy got right on Salas’ tail and the pressure was on for these two. As soon as these two hit the straight away Salas would pull away slightly but as soon as they got back into the technical stuff on the track Sandy was right back up on him. These two were tire to tire many times during their race. Salas was making sure to go inside to inside in the corners to stay ahead. Salas stayed ahead to the finish and got a win, Sandy took second and Neill ended up finishing in third.
Competition and racing fun was had all night here at Megacross we have our last race before we take some time in July to spruce things up a bit. July 8th is going to be a Bonus points for Megacross event, and if tonight's racing is any indication of what can happen we are looking forward to some excellent racing, nothing like spending a Saturday evening at the races leaving you with the rest of the weekend for all the other things to do!
