Megacross started a few years ago taking a few weeks off in the middle of the season to adjust and do some things. This last event of the spring season was in jepordy of running outside from about Thursday on. Everything being ready as it always is can't compete with mother nature when she decides to rain all morning. Then hit again middle late afternoon. So inside we go, not that anyone wants to be inside but racing is racing and having the indoor is a special option not seen in the nation like this for local racing and riders. Interesting as many will not race inside and others come just because it's the track they like and race in the winter series. Riders results show this and have over the last few times this has been done.
Conner Robinson (457), and Grant Robinson(426). Not related at all and are likely 15 years apart both had some good racing tonight. Conner the older Robinson knows what a guaranteed purse means! He swept 3 A classes this night 250, Open, and 25+A, and went home with a smile and likely enough to cover some gas money. Conner knows holeshots matter indoors and did well with that process. Rj Mackenzie (50) is always hanging in there with Conner the two have had some great racing inside and out for a better part of the last few years. Today was a Robinson night.
Grant Robinson, changed up his family tradition Yamaha ride for the shiny new orange KTM not to long ago. Seems he has adapted well to the new steed and is putting in the laps, time and effort to becoming a solid rider as well. Grant has rode inside and Megacross since the beginning, and a long heritage of family history on the tracks around here his abilities are showing that he will be a rider to compete with in the future. Tonight he won both 85Jr and 85 9-13 classes in fine style. Taking home a wood plaque but more importantly pulling that coveted KTM contingency that helps with the upkeep and expenses of racing every weekend!
There was quite a discussion back at the end of last year on bringing in a Girls class at the district level. Many who come around the sx racing scene here in IL know that the Girls of d17 rock! Tonight, 7 girls lined up for the girl class, 6 of them took off while Mallie Arnold (99) had a bit of a late start, but it wasn’t long until she caught back up and got right back in the mix of all the rest of the girls. This was after Rylee face planted in the heat race, not only are the girls very competitive, they are tough as nails too! Getting back to racing by the first lap around Arnold was able to get up to fourth place with Rylee Woods (610) leading the class, Sienna Hastings (179) in second, and Abygail Buettner (515) in third. These girls stayed pretty consistent the whole race until Hastings had some issues which dropped her down to fourth and put Buettner in second and Arnold in third. Throughout this entire race we watch Arnold as she is making her way closer and closer to Buettner wondering if she is going to have enough time to make a pass. As the girls were coming around to finish their last lap, Woods finished first and won the race while Buettner and Arnold were still fighting for that second place spot. As the two came over the finish line jump Buettner was about an inch in front of Arnold which meant second place for Buettner and third for Mallie, even after her very late start.
In Schoolboy, Connor Thompson (71) had a good start and took full advantage of it. While Thompson was in the lead and gaining distance on the rest of the class Tyce Kubiak (34) and Bryce Arnold (9) battled it off for second and third place. As these two made their way around the track with Kubiak in front of Arnold, Arnold tried to take every opportunity he could to get around Kubiak. But Kubiak was not going to give in that easy, in fact he did not give in at all, Kubiak managed to stay right ahead of Arnold for enough time to finish the race and pull a second place which left Arnold with a third. As the two finished you could see the disappointment coming from Arnold with his head shake and how he slouched down a bit once the race was over.
Jason Coleman (917) pulled the holeshot in 30+ B/C with Brandon Hastings (79) right behind him. Hastings was able to stay right behind Coleman until around the 4th lap when we saw Coleman start to pull away from Hastings little by little. Since Hastings wasn’t able to get around Coleman that meant Coleman had a win for himself (guess the old mans still got it) and Hastings ended with a second.
Honorable mentions Anthony Westergard (769) used to race Megacross back in the day, from WI he came down from time to time and had some good racing as a youngster, well he moved to Cali and was back for a visit, little did he know that there isn't any rain outs and was introduced to the indoor stuff. He did well for his first time!
Max Boldtz is been lighting up the C classes and age classes this season. Seemingly coming out of nowhere he has put together some good races this part of the year already. Winning 25b/c and 250 C.As each race goes on, we see many racers improving, someone I think that I have really seen a lot of improvement from is Wyatt Sandy (701)
We are only half way through the season so I can’t wait to see even more improvement from this kid. Wyatt came out to Megatrax often to make sure to keep
practicing over the winter and I think that has helped him a lot with riding. Another thing I have noticed from this kid id no matter what place he gets or how his race went he also has a good attitude before and after every race and that is something I love to see. Megacross returns to the fairgrounds on July 23rd, and with some small track changes and rebuilding the jumps it will be ready for the second season this summer. The
AMA District 17 State Championship motocross weekend is in September and the 23 Challenge here at Megacross will be a great way to wind down the season. Blink and we will be back indoors all winter long again! Seems like racing never ends, but the way it is, the riders show how well it works as they are doing very well and doing well in all aspects of racing, locally and nationally. Warm weather states now have more comptition with all the indoor stuff going on!
