It’s not a mudder! Megacross 8/7

Mother Nature took pity on the
Megacross track crew and riders and prepped only slightly before the event. With a light shower that helped the
track, the crew was forced to water instead of breaking out the Sham wow! Rains have plagued the Megajam events
this year.
Heat races usually set the tone for
what’s to come in the main events and Open A proved it. Ross ‘Rollerball’ Martin has been
shredding the track and will surely have some extra money saved up for winter
snowcross clothes from Megacross this year. When the gate dropped on the Open A heat, Martin launched his
Honda out front while Ryan Poulter (27) and Kevin Marwardt (135) played chase. While contender Scott Zont(923) had a bad
start and saved it for the mains, Martin was out front setting a blistering pace
until the KTM of Poulter passed him on lap four on the south side of the track. That’s the way it would end with
Poulter winning, Martin chasing in second and Markwardt in third.
30A heat had the Honda of Jim ‘Buck’
Cherry (40) taking the holeshot only to get passed by the crafty veteran Jason
‘I’m a new daddy’ Kloptowsky (410) on his Yamaha soon after. Following in third on the Kawasaki was
none other than David ‘Purple’ Hayes .
Kloptowsky vanished on the Yamaha to the heat win while ‘Purple’
Hayes slipped his way into second over ‘Buck’ Cherry who took third.
On a mission this year has been the #18
Kawasaki of Troy Quest in 30B. He
must have let his brother in on some secrets though as the #14 Honda of Kevin
Quest stayed close throughout the heat race.
Keeping the pressure on in third was none other than Brett ‘I take
MegaX pictures’ Wilkinson who stayed with the Quest brothers for a fine heat
race finish.
With the A classes pretty stacked for the
mains it was none other than Ross “rollerball’ Martin (837) taking the holeshot
(again) in Open A. Following
closely was the sleeping giant from the heat race, Scott Zont on the TZR Honda. Poulter sat in third followed by Markwardt in fourth. 2nd, 3rd and 4th
were so close you could throw a Sham Wow over them. Meanwhile, Martin was setting a pace that wasn’t being
matched and was beginning to pull away. Also
laying down some fast laps was Kyle Corman who battled back to a third place
finish after Markwardt attempted the pass on Zont only to slide out in the
corner allowing Corman a gimmie. At
the checkers it was Martin, Zont, Corman, and Poulter.
30A main had Racin’ Jason Kloptowsky
taking the holeshot followed by ‘Purple’ Hayes and in third, Lil’ Skee
‘buy a Ford’ Hartman. Kloptowsky
was keeping a nice relaxed pace with Hayes trying to stay with the Yamaha and
pull away. Hayes tried valiantly to
stay with the pulling away Kloptowsky in front but couldn’t match the pace. ‘Buck’ Cherry slipped by the 147
Yamaha of Hartman for third. In the
end Kloptowsky had a 4 second gap on Hayes, who was followed by Cherry in third.
30B main had ‘soon to be moving to A?’
Troy Quest out front at the start only to be hounded by the resurging speed of
brother Kevin Quest in second. The
two brothers would put space between third place rider Doug Harms in third who
was putting in a strong ride of his own. The
younger Quest hounded the #18 Kawasaki of T. Quest all the way to the checkers
for second followed by Harms in 3rd.
The elder brother could be having a sibling rivalry by season end as the
young pup Quest has been steadily improving on the Borelli tuned Honda.
The spectator lining the fence witnessed
none other than the Honda of Jesse Keith holeshot the 25B main. Riding his Garry ‘the king O’
Spring’ tuned suspension Honda, Keith was not to be denied as he set a pace
that kept him out front the whole race. Following the ‘cool whip’ Keith over the finish line was
the #240 Kawasaki of Ryan George in second and none other than ‘flashbulb’
Brett Wilkinson in third.
With
the Megacross season slowly nearing an end and some riders out with injury the
point’s battle will be heating up for many.
For those riders classes that weren’t covered in this write up, put on
a strong showing next race as coverage will focus on ‘other’ classes. Who will hunker down? Who will forge ahead? Who will wilt under the pressure? Who will take the Megacross Shootout
Series championship for 2010? Stay
tuned…
