Round seven of the Megacross Shootout series has proven to be a reflection of new and old.  You don’t understand? Read on.  Not too often have I been a spectator to one of the Duke O’Dirt events but this was one of them and I learned a few things.  The sport has gotten faster, the talent has gotten older and the racing is always good if you keep a keen eye on the battles within.

The +40 guys had a little battle in the heat with Steve “I can’t believe it’s not butter” Perkins (164) taking the holeshot on his Yamaha followed by the Honda’s of Andy Cole and Scott Holmes.  Cole stayed on Perkins fender and waited for a chance in the off camber section on the south side to stick his wheel in on Perkins. It didn’t happen as Steve’s hard to rattle and went wire to wire for the heat win, with Cole 2nd, and Scott Holmes 3rd.

Speaking of vet riders, the young vet rider Ross Martin (837), who also cleaned house in +25A and 250A, showed what speed is to the young guys of Open A in the heat race.  Martin took the holeshot followed by James Garrett’s Kawasaki then Ryan Poulter on the KTM in third.  Poulter had his work cut out for him with Garrett but finally made the pass around the outside of Garrett before the finish line only to run out of time to close on Martin’s 3 second gap.  Checkers come out with Martin, Poulter,  Garrett and Malatia parked on Garrett’s fender for fourth.

The 30A heat race had the Kawasaki of David ‘purple’ Hayes pulling the holeshot and taking it from start to finish.  Skee ‘stay puff’ Hartman stayed behind Purple Hayes till the #40 of Paul ‘buck’ Cherry made the move in the off camber section to pass Hartman for second.  Cruising to the checkers was Hayes (who would also took the win in +35 and took third in +25A), Cherry, Hartman and the KTM of Ryan ‘tree’ Moss in fourth.  Wow, another Kawasaki holeshot went to the #18 of Troy ‘invisible fire’ Quest in the 30B heat.  Quest would slowly check out like he was riding on some sort of space ship and let the #266 Honda of Brian Goodin’ Plenty slip into second around the 926 Suzuki of Shawn ‘tin-knocker’ Christen.  Another Quest, this time the 14 Honda of Kevin Quest, moved around the 926 and 266 machines and placed himself in the runner up position till the checkers followed by Goodin in third.

The women’s class had the FHK Honda of April Roper(15)taking the holeshot and slowly checking out in front of the #20 RCR Kawasaki of Kim Chandler and Kayla Miller in 3rd.  The Main event happened just the same with Roper slowly checking out and Chandler giving chase.  Third would go to Lauren Hicks who made the trip up from Georgia with her sister Mallory……Long haul for Megacross!!!

The Open A main event holeshot went to the KTM of Ryan Poulter, followed by new A rider Max Malatia.  Third was none other than Ross ‘Rollerball’ Martin.    Martin didn’t wait very long to show Malatia how the vet works by passing him in the corner after the whoops.  Martin coming underneath Malatia now set his site on Poulter.  Martin slowly closed the gap and passed Poulter using the same line through the whoops and corner.  Martin would pull a comfy gap over Poulter, while Malatia just wouldn’t give up the chase and stayed close to Poulter till the checkers.  Fourth went to Garrett and fifth went to Justin Kelly.

30A main event had Paul ‘Buck’ Cherry (40) taking the start followed by ‘Purple’ Hayes and Lil’ Skee Hartman in third.  Hayes was on mission tonight and pulled up on Cherry and passed the Honda rider down the back straight.  Lil’ Skee Hartman followed Hayes, and Cherry to the checkered flag along with Ryan Moss in 4th.  30B had another Kawasaki out front at the start with Troy Quest in front.  The 2 stroke of Shawn Christen got another good start in 2nd but lost it to Brain Goodin’ Plenty on the first lap.  Shortly after, Kevin Quest would take third on the Honda.  Quest out in front was running away like the barefoot bandit while Goodin was trying to close the gap.  Goodin’Plenty would finally close the gap and apply pressure on Quest.   Showing him a wheel on the white flag lap in the last turn, Quest would close the door on him and take the checkers.  Following Quest was Brian Goodin’ Plenty and the younger Quest brother Kevin in 3rd on the Honda.  Following the race Brain Goodin’ Plenty has this to say, ”I showed a tire but he would shut the door on me.  My Borelli Suspension was all boinged out and couldn’t have been better.”  Winner Quest has this to say, “Brian was on me like a dog on a piece of meat the whole race.  It’s no fluke, I’ve been training at home and I pretty much piss excellence.”  3rd place finisher Kevin Quest (14) said, “I could run with Goodin at times and other times I’d drop back.  I’m really hungry right now.  I’d like to thank my son for getting me back into riding and the King O’Spring Garry Borelli (Borelli Suspension) for the boinger setup.”

The Duke O’Dirt and crew did another great job out there yet mother nature still stopped by and did a little watering as usual.  I think the vet guys really showed tonight that they can go fast and stay consistent.  With Martin and Hayes putting in crazy solid rides I think they earn the first dually appointed Megacross Shootout Series ‘If ya’ ain’t first, yer’ last’ award!  Wish I was out there.  See everyone in two weeks!
